I Specifically Requested a Pager Without Explosives

AP Photo/Hussein Malla

News about the brilliant IDF attack on Hezbollah fighters in Lebanon Tuesday resulting in at least nine deaths and significant injuries to thousands of other fighters has slowly been leaking out. The slow pace is understandable, as Israel clearly doesn't want to let all of their cats out of the bag at once, but more details continue to come to light. These include general descriptions of not only how the explosives operated, but also how they were triggered. First of all, the message that all of the fighters received was disguised to appear as if it was coming from senior Hezbollah leadership. Further, the pagers were rigged in such a way that a coded message would cause the batteries inside the pager to overheat, triggering the explosives that were hidden inside. This is turning out to be one of the most effective mass attacks in the history of counterterrorism, not to mention being unintentionally hilarious in some ways. (NY Post)

The exploding pagers that wounded thousands of Hezbollah fighters in Lebanon Tuesday were reportedly detonated by a message impersonating the leaders of the recognized terrorist group.

Hezbollah militants all across Lebanon and parts of Syria received a message that appeared to be sent by the group’s leadership to their new pagers at 3:30 p.m. But in reality, the fake message was the trigger that set off explosives hidden in the devices, officials told the New York Times.

The message triggered the batteries inside the pagers to overheat and ignite the explosives, sources told Sky News Arabia.

As mentioned above, Israel is in no hurry to release all of the specific details as to how they managed to pull this off, but it was devastatingly successful. Killing nine fighters (technically eight fighters and one child, unfortunately) wouldn't make that big of an impact, but the thousands of other fighters who were injured won't be taking to the battlefield anytime soon. Local outlets describe fighters having their hands blown off or suffering grievous wounds to their faces, thighs, and groins. (Ouch.) The injuries impacted all of the places where one might typically carry a pager. That's going to make it challenging to carry around weapons or bombs to use against civilian targets.

The triggering message that the pagers received was also rather brilliant. Rather than a paging signal from some random caller, the incoming message looked like it came from the senior leaders in the terror group. That's not the sort of call that you simply let go to voicemail. The fighters all suddenly began hearing an urgent tone suggesting that orders were coming in from the top, so they were all simultaneously grabbing for their pagers when they began exploding.

The strategy was almost cartoonish in its simplicity. It's somewhat reminiscent of an old-time Tom & Jerry comic where the mouse delivers a bomb to the cat with a picture of a fresh fish taped to the front of it. What's this? A fish for me? Awesome! (Boom!) That's another reason that Israel wouldn't want the details to be made public too quickly. If these jabronis were dumb enough to fall for this, who knows what sort of bait they might bite on next time? In any event, it was a genius plan.

Not everyone is quite as excited about this stroke of genius on the part of Israel. The WaPo warns of "grave implications" of the pager attack. The "ominous implications" they are warning of seem to focus on the fact that Hezbollah will feel forced to respond with further attacks of their own. But does that make any sense to anyone who has been watching all of this unfold? Are we to believe that Hezbollah wasn't already planning its next attack against Israel? That's all they ever do. It's the reason they exist. If there are "ominous implications" for anyone here, it would seem to be for Hezbollah's fighters. It's considerably harder to pull off an attack when you have gaping holes in your leg or groin and it's difficult to wield a firearm with no hands.

Hezbollah lost the functional use of thousands of its fighters in a single afternoon. Janes Defense analysts estimate that Hezbollah has approximately 20,000 fighters in various states of readiness. They just lost a massive percentage of that force in a single day. This is a time to celebrate, not mope around. The fight is far from over, but for now we can chalk one up for the good guys.

BREAKING: Walkie-Talkies Explode in Hezbollah Strongholds in Second Wave; UPDATE: Nine Dead, 300+ Injured

BY Ed Morrissey | HotAir.com

AP Photo/Bassam Masri

Operation 1980s Called And Want Their Tech Back may not yet have ended. According to multiple reports, a second wave of explosions have taken place in Lebanon, primarily in Hezbollah strongholds in Beirut and the Bekaa Valley. This time, the explosions have been created by "networked devices" and possibly walkie-talkies.

The BBC has begun tracking these reports in a live blog, and has an image of smoke plumes rising over Beirut. And this might not be a coincidence to yesterday's pagercide:

A security source now tells Reuters that hand-held radios have been targeted in the latest attacks in Lebanon.

A source also says Hezbollah bought the radios five months ago, at the same time as the pagers that exploded yesterday.

The Jerusalem Post suggests that "networked devices" may have gotten detonated in some fashion. Hezbollah has now warned all its personnel to stop using all communications devices, they report:

According to unconfirmed reports, Hezbollah has told its operatives to distance itself from communication devices.

Hezbollah also told its members to dispose of all devices containing a lithium battery or that are connected to the internet.

Reuters later quoted senior Hezbollah official  Hashem Safieddine as saying the terror group was in a "new phase" and a "punishment is certainly coming.["]

New phase? That's undeniably true, but Hezbollah may not realize yet what this new phase means. A punishment should be coming, but Hezbollah should direct it to the idiots who acquired and distributed all of these low-tech devices without determining whether anyone had tampered with them.

Also: It's hard to organize a "punishment" against an armed enemy in the 21st century when you have to communicate with smoke signals and carrier pigeons.

So far the reports have been sketchy, but all of them point to a larger operation for the second day in a row

Ali Hashem, a journalist based in Lebanon, wrote on X: "Another round of blasts in different areas around south Lebanon and Beirut southern suburb. Devices in cars, motorcycles, and people’s hands are exploding."

It comes after videos from Beirut’s southern suburbs showed people lying on the pavement with wounds on their hands or near their trouser pockets.

NBC News also reports that official Lebanese sources make clear that this new wave hit a broad number of targets. They also report that the Biden administration has concluded that Israel is responsible for yesterday's attack, but are not yet clear why they launched it:

According to Lebanon's National News Agency, "a number" of wounded people had been taken to hospitals in the southern suburbs of Beirut after their wireless pagers exploded.

Two U.S. officials said Israel was behind the attack targeting Hezbollah with exploding pagers on Tuesday. The militant group and Lebanese officials also pinned blame on Israel for the explosions, though Israel has not taken responsibility publicly.

It was unclear why Israel carried out the attack when it did and whether it was an opportunistic operation or something more strategic that would be followed by other actions, the officials said.

The who is obvious, although why the Biden administration would discuss it publicly is somewhat inexplicable. The why, at least in strategic terms, is less clear. This would have made complete sense as the start of an IDF offensive in southern Lebanon by taking out as much of Hezbollah's command and control as possible. Hezbollah has already essentially ended its ability to respond in real time, but that may not last long; the Iranians are no doubt rushing to fill the gap with their own systems .... perhaps after an additional inspection or two to see if those have been compromised. (I'll have more on that later.)

So why hasn't Israel opened up a new offensive in Lebanon? The first wave of the pager operation clearly succeeded beyond any wildest dreams; Hezbollah may have lost 25% or more of its active ranks, mainly in leadership and command positions. It's an operation designed as an opening move in a major offensive. So why hasn't Israel stepped off into Lebanon yet?

According to the Times of Israel, they may have felt forced to pull the trigger not for operational purposes, but to keep the pager operation from being exposed:

Israel caused thousands of Hezbollah terror group pagers to explode Tuesday, killing nine people and wounding nearly 3,000, amid fears that Hezbollah was about to uncover that the devices had been tampered with, according to Wednesday reports.

Israeli intelligence services originally wanted to detonate the pagers as an opening blow in an all-out war against Hezbollah, Axios reported, citing American and Israeli officials. They chose to act early, however, when a Hezbollah member became suspicious of the devices and planned to alert his superiors, Al-Monitor reported.

Just days earlier, a different Hezbollah member had come to suspect the devices had been tampered with, and then he was killed, Al-Monitor said.

Upon learning of the suspicions, Israeli leaders reportedly considered launching an immediate full-scale war in order to retain the pager attack as an opening blow. They also considered leaving things as they were, even at the risk of the operation being compromised, according to the Al-Monitor report.

It will take Hezbollah at least several days to restore chains of command, so the window is still open. But if this was done as a way to prevent the trap from being exposed, it could still work to force Hezbollah and Iran into retreating from their year-long proxy war against Israel via diplomatic means. The next few days will tell whether mass pagercide will create some breathing room for a deal, or whether Israel will act to deal with Iran's most dangerous proxy in the region.

In the meantime, I'll update this post as more data emerges, or follow up later with more analysis. Keep your pagers handy -- er, stay tuned

UpdateCNN hears that the walkie-talkies are the devices blowing up, but their source says the impact will be more limited:

Preliminary information suggested that there were between 15 to 20 explosions in southern suburbs of Beirut, and a further 15 to 20 blasts in southern Lebanon, the source said.

The walkie-talkies are less widely used than the pagers that blew up on Tuesday, as they had only been distributed among people organizing crowds, such as funerals and marches, the source said.

That makes sense. Normal walkie-talkies on civilian bands have a very limited range. Had they been military-grade radios on non-commercial frequencies, that may have been different. But who's to say that Israel hasn't tampered with those, too?

Update: This update from the Times of Israel is too good to be believed, except that CNN apparently heard the same thing. I joked yesterday that Hezbollah must have bought all their pagers from ACME, but now I'm not so sure it's a joke:

Lebanese security sources say the handheld radios that exploded this afternoon were purchased by the Hezbollah terror group about five months ago at the same time as the thousands of pagers that exploded yesterday.

Are you kidding me? Hezbollah bought all of their new equipment from a single source and didn't check any of it? Man, the Mossad owes their leadership a fruit basket. Sans explosive, of course.

Update: If it's true that Hezbollah got the radios from the same source as the pagers, why would they have used the radios after yesterday? If that's true, it's almost intentional incompetence. One has to wonder whether Hezbollah's field troops are wondering whether they have been stabbed in the back by their own leadership. I doubt they have much confidence in it today, at least.

Update: The casualty count thus far is one dead and over 100 injured, according to CNN's report from Lebanon's health ministry. That's a pretty significant second wave.

Update: AFP reports that the casualty count is now nine dead. That's about the same as yesterday's pager operation, only with far fewer devices involved. Of course, one has to have a walkie-talkie up to one's ear to operate it properly, unless you're using wired earbuds. But even then, you'd have to hold it in front of your mouth while speaking into it.

UpdateAccording to CNN, Israel alerted the US that they would launch an operation in Lebanon but didn't explain what it would be. Its scope as well as its success came as "a shock to senior US officials" nonetheless. It's easy to believe that the authors of the Kabul disgrace three years ago would be shocked by a successful military operation.

Update: The BBC updates the casualty figures: nine dead, more than 300 injured now. Expect that to keep climbing, and it does raise the question as to whether we're talking about "walkie talkies" or military-grade handheld radios. There is a very large difference between the two in capabilities. It's hard to imagine hundreds of Hezbollah personnel using that many walkie-talkies simultaneously.

Press Narrative Melts After Truth About 'Bomb Threats' in Springfield Comes Out

By Bonchie | RedState.com

AP Photo/Matt Slocum

Following the second assassination attempt on Donald Trump, a common refrain from the left was that political violence is a "both sides" issue. MSNBC tried that line multiple times, as did some of the major newspapers, with the idea being that you can't call out Democrat rhetoric because Republican rhetoric has caused issues as well.

So what was the evidence for that equivocation being used as a way to deflect from someone trying to murder Trump again? CNN's Dana Bash provided a perfect example of it when she accused JD Vance of inciting "bomb threats" in Springfield, OH.

To be sure, the claim was dubious from the moment it left her mouth. Bomb threats are a dime a dozen. They happen every day and are historically harmless fear-mongering. After all, why would an attacker call in a bomb threat if they intended to use a bomb to cause harm? That would defeat the purpose. Regardless, pretending that's equatable to an attempted assassination in which an actual shooter was fired upon and arrested is laughable.

There's another problem with the press line about those "bomb threats," though. They were not only all hoaxes, but they were not connected to anyone supporting JD Vance. There's not even any evidence they were made in relation to the Haitian migrant situation.

This was completely predictable. As I noted above, bomb threats are essentially all hoaxes. I can't remember a single time that a bomb threat was made prior to an actual bombing. I'm not saying that's never happened in human history. I'm sure it has, but it's certainly rare to the point of being almost non-existent.

Typically, a bomb threat is called in as a prank or as a way to cause chaos. To take a series of them without knowing their origin or purpose and then to use them to suggest JD Vance and Donald Trump were inciting violence was baseless nonsense. It was also completely transparent. Democrats never apply that standard to anyone on their own side, even when the violence being perpetrated is unquestionably real.

So will the mainstream press share this new information about these "bomb threats?"

I'll go ahead and spoil it for everyone. Bash is never going to mention that story again. She won't go on air to correct the record. She won't apologize for blaming Vance and Trump for something they didn't do. Instead, she'll just move on to the next narrative without having to answer for the collapse of the last one. That's how the press always operates, and it's why no one should trust them to be a purveyor of truth.

The Story Behind Trump's Second Assassin Took a Strange Turn...and It Involves the Media

By Matt Vespa | Townhall.com

AP Photo/Ross D. Franklin

Donald Trump was golfing in West Palm Beach, Florida, when Ryan Wesley Routh waited along the green, hoping to assassinate the former president and record it. He left a GoPro and an AK-style rifle mounted with a scope on the scene. He was later apprehended by local police, but not before scurrying when Secret Service agents opened fire on him; they saw the barrel from his gun through the shrubbery.

Ryan Wesley Routh has a criminal record that spans the Himalayas. We’re waiting to see if he was on the radar for any federal law enforcement agencies vis-à-vis recent threats: the FBI has a terrible track record of being ‘in the know’ concerning future perpetrators of firearm-related crimes nowadays. Yet, in an odd turn, the media had this joker on their radar. They interviewed him. When his name was released, The New York Times must’ve checked their clips because there he was. The publication interviewed him about the ongoing war in Ukraine—Routh appears to have been obsessed with the subject:

In a telephone interview with The New York Times in 2023, when Mr. Routh was in Washington, he spoke with a self-assuredness of a seasoned diplomat who thought his plans to support Ukraine’s war effort were sure to succeed. But he appeared to have little patience for anyone who got in his way. When an American foreign fighter seemed to talk down to him in a Facebook message he shared with The New York Times, Mr. Routh said, “he needs to be shot.”

In the interview, Mr. Routh said he was in Washington to meet with the U.S. Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, known as the Helsinki Commission “for two hours” to help push for more support for Ukraine. The commission is led by members of Congress and staffed by congressional aides. It is influential on matters of democracy and security and has been vocal in supporting Ukraine.

Mr. Routh also said he was seeking recruits for Ukraine from among Afghan soldiers who had fled the Taliban. He said he planned to move them, in some cases illegally, from Pakistan and Iran to Ukraine. He said dozens had expressed interest.

“We can probably purchase some passports through Pakistan, since it’s such a corrupt country,” he said.

It is not clear whether Mr. Routh followed through, but one former Afghan soldier said he had been contacted and was interested in fighting if it meant leaving Iran, where he was living illegally.

Semafor also spoke to this man

When Ryan Routh spoke to Semafor on March 7, 2023, he was frustrated with the Ukrainian government for which he’d traveled around the world to support.

The Ukrainians, he complained, were being too rigid about admitting foreign soldiers of dubious qualifications, including a group of Afghan commandos who were facing skepticism and bureaucratic roadblocks in Kyiv.

“Ukraine is very often hard to work with. Many foreign soldiers leave after a week in Ukraine or must move from unit to unit to find a place they are respected and appreciated,” he told Semafor. He’d been “yelled at” every time he suggested they tap Afghan commandos. “They’re afraid that anybody and everybody is a Russian spy,” he said with frustration.

[…]

When Semafor talked to him, Routh was one of a wave of American volunteers in Ukraine, the self-appointed director of a group he’d started called the International Volunteer Center. He was, even by the standards of that frantic moment, a bit over the top, a Ukrainian involved in the effort told us at the time. But he was also, they said, authentically involved in the efforts to bring in foreign troops, and we quoted him in a story about the Afghan fighters.

On X, he frantically tweeted at President Volodymyr Zelenskyy with his ideas — for instance, “to use Independence Park to create a tent city of all the foreigners here in support to get thousands more foreign civilians to come and support Ukraine.” Zelenskyy did not appear to respond.

He’s also featured in pro-Ukrainian propaganda. The whole story has now taken a weird turn. Moreover, how long do you think until this story gets suffocated by the media? Look what happened to Thomas Matthew Crooks, who was killed trying to assassinate Trump on July 13 in Butler, Pennsylvania. Secret Service can’t stonewall anymore, not with two assassination attempts on Trump within the past 65 days.

What are the odds that the two shooters who have attempted to assassinate President Trump are in two very distinct and different commercials?  One supporting Ukraine and the other a BlackRock ad 🤔

BIZARRE ? OR IF YOU WERE A BETTING MAN, YOU’D say ( fill in the blank)

Routh was a virulent anti-Trump nutter butter, though I’m sure the media will pitch the usual ‘we don’t know his motives.’ They shouldn’t: enough of his anti-Trump social media posts were screenshotted, and his son said he hates Trump. Gee—what a mystery this is, right?

Yet, the Ukraine stuff and these supposed contacts with various government entities add a new layer of intrigue. Did this man ever meet with these top officials?

LIVE UPDATES: Trump Survives 2nd Assassination Attempt — This Time at His Golf Course

By Matt Margolis | P J Media

AP Photo/Stephanie Matat

Update 5:56 p.m.: Multiple media outlets have identified the suspect as Ryan Wesley Routh.

Update 4:51 p.m.: The FBI now says it is investigating "what appears to be an attempted assassination of Trump."

Update 4:22 p.m.: Martin County, Fla., Sheriff William D. Snyder told reporters that his department surrounded and intercepted the car with the suspect, whom he described as "relatively calm, flat affect... never asked what this is about." Snyder said he knows the suspect's name but declined to share that information. He is reported to be in his late 50s.

Police immediately turned him over to the FBI, and bomb-sniffing dogs cleared the vehicle. Snyder said that all roads in the vicinity are closed by order of Gov. Ron DeSantis. Trump was escorted back to his Mar-a-Lago home.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) just posted on X, "Just spoke with President Trump. He is one of the strongest people I’ve ever known. He’s in good spirits and he is more resolved than ever to save our country."

Original story:

Gunshots were reported shortly before 2 p.m. near former President Donald Trump’s International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Fla., while the former president was playing golf. According to multiple reports, the Secret Service took Trump to safety "after agents opened fire on a man who was spotted with what may have been a gun while the former president was on the links, according to law enforcement sources."

CNN reports that "police believe an armed individual intended to target Trump."

An individual has been detained, and a Russian-made AK-47 was reportedly recovered at the scene. In addition, a black vehicle has been impounded.

The shots came from "a few hundred feet from where Trump was playing," according to Fox News. "It was the Secret Service that fired the gunshots" after they saw a man carrying a long gun," Fox reported. He reportedly dropped the gun and ran and was apprehended by Secret Service.

It's unclear at that time whether Trump has been evacuated from the golf course.

Sources said the Secret Service spotted a suspicious individual on the Trump International Golf Course West Palm Beach, and opened fire when agents saw what appeared to be the barrel of a gun.

It’s not clear whether the man was on the course or near it.

An agent opened fire, shooting multiple times.

According to the report, the man was later arrested by local police.

Though details are limited, according to Fox News, Trump's presence on the golf course was not part of his public schedule.

Initial reports suggested two people were firing at each other. However, sources said investigators now believe the Secret Service agent was the only shooter.

The man’s motives are not yet known. He was arrested by Palm Beach County sheriff’s deputies.

The White House issued a statement soon after the incident: “The President and Vice President have been briefed about the security incident at the Trump International Golf Course, where former President Trump was golfing. They are relieved to know that he is safe. They will be kept regularly updated by their team.”

"President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity. No further details at this time," Steven Cheung, director of communications for the Trump campaign, said in a statement received by PJ Media.

There are reports that officials believe Trump was the intended target, though PJ Media has not been able to verify this claim independently.

The Left Is Powerless in Stopping the Haitians Eating Pets Story...And It's Amazing to Watch

By Matt Vespa | Townhall.com

AP Photo/Ben Curtis, File

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry, though in this instance, it’s not a statement regarding some appalling examples of liberal media bias. For the Ohio Haitians ‘eating the pets’ story, it’s pure entertainment, maybe a touch of schadenfreude: the liberal media is being tortured in their attempt to neutralize the story. Contrary to the establishment press, this story hasn’t been debunked. There’s no way within 48-72 hours that authorities can verify dogs and cats are not being eaten by the tens of thousands of Haitians in Springfield, Ohio.

As for the local birdlife, geese and ducks are being eaten, with police reports to corroborate the allegations. Even a fact check done by local media on that story's angle hasn’t negated it. If anything, it might have shined a light that this problem has expanded. I’m talking about the viral picture of the migrant holding a dead goose—that was not in Springfield but nearby Columbus.

The inability of the media to suffocate this story alluded to the industry’s appalling lack of trust. No one believes them, no matter how hard they try. It only seems to further entrench people’s belief that Haitian migrants are running wild in Springfield. The consumption of pets needs to be verified, but many corroborating eyewitness accounts exist. Geese and ducks are being taken, driving out of control in the town. It’s led to fatalities.

Influx of wild-driving Haitian migrants turning streets of Springfield, Ohio into combat zone: ‘Eight to 10 accidents a day here’ trib.al/vLD7TdF

Even when liberals try to mock Donald Trump for mentioning it in ABC News’ debate, it’s become a MAGA anthem. The songs are gold, only adding to the media’s inability to stamp out this story, which shines a direct light on Biden’s failed immigration policy. In this initiative, Kamala Harris was appointed border czar.

They can’t stop it, and it won’t be stopped. The media can only cope and seethe.
